Objective
My current objective is to switch my career from being a Test Environment Analyst to a .NET developer.
I already have considerable experience of writing Windows Forms applications and am now looking at Web development and mobile devices.
Experience
(Contract) JAN 2005 – April 2007 Role - Environment Analyst / Developer
This role has involved working on various projects to ensure delivery of test environments and resolve any issues arising. I am currently working on the Standard Desktop Project, a project to upgrade all of Centrica PLC's desktop PC's to Windows XP. This project uses the Altiris Deployment Solution to deliver all of Centrica’s applications to their respective users via Application Role Profiles. My specific responsibilities include: -
- Configure the deployment tools to deploy MS Office Applications to a dedicated “Small Applications Launcher” when they become available for Model Office testing and subsequent live deployment. This includes providing 3rd Line support to Centrica Test Teams during MO testing as well as liaising with 3rd party suppliers such as Cognizant and Infosys to enable the resolution of faults and issues etc. Also managing the fault queue in HP Openview.
- Develop and support a multi user ‘Applications Inventory’ database using SQL Server 2000 with a Microsoft Access 2000 front end. Developing the initial proof of concept and researching user’s requirements. The database system was successfully deployed and used by approximately 30 users in the business and technical teams to collect application details during the migration of 1900 existing business NT applications to XP. Supporting the database when live by tailoring and releasing updates to the front end as required and developing reusable custom queries and reports to provide MI.
- Designed and developed an application called the “Small Applications Launcher” using .Net 2 and SQL server 2005. This application replaces an existing MS Access application that was having performance issues; it is used to deploy MS Access Databases that have been “Locked Down” to prevent uncontrolled development. Rolled out across Centrica this application has a user base in the tens of thousands. The application is rolled out as a package by Altiris Deployment Solution.
Self Employed Photographer Feb 2004 – Jan 2005
Worked as a self employed photographer specialising in landscape / Cityscape and Sports photography. Also worked as a self employed CORGI registered gas fitter. Some of my photographic work may be seen at Photoworkshop.com I am an accredited sports photographer to Dragbike.com of Cincinnati USA covering British events for them.
CENTRICA (contract) Aug 2000 - Feb 2004 Test Analyst
As part of a team of 3 test analysts I was responsible for EDTM and ESRS technical integration testing. EDTM distributes data files to and from business systems to outside industry (Electricity and Gas) and the integration testing at volume involved thousands of data files. Responsibilities included: -
- Writing test documentation such as test plans and test scripts
- Preparing all test data identified for test execution of scenarios
- Test execution of scenarios. This involved Functional / UAT and Regression testing of various systems.
- Use of Mercury Test Director to raise and manage software faults identified during test execution to re-test and closure
Additional achievements included: -
- Semi automation of test execution by writing Unix Shell scripts which executed the test scripts and also correlated the test results with each script.
- Writing C programs, Unix shell scripts and AWK scripts for the testing team to aid in test data preparation and test execution, as required.
- Solely responsible for writing all low level automation scripts required by the test team
- Writing some technical support documentation, such as a Unix tutorial for testers and a user manual for the KEA terminal (Telnet front end), including a tutorial for testers on how to write complex command line expressions.
Subsequently I moved into an Environment Analyst role providing integrated test environments to a large team (30+) of technical integration testers. This involved automating the delivery of integrated test environment front ends to the tester’s desk tops as the user base was large and required frequent rebuilds. I also developed a system for controlling the deployment of these environments to prevent the users straying into each others environments.
